Blue
2yr old neutered male
Blue, named for his big blue eyes, is estimated to be 2 years old. He was recently neutered and is a mix between a German Wirehair Pointer and a German Shorthair Pointer. Blue has a big lovey heart and wants to love life but is very timid and scared about most things such as noises, different surfaces and textures and just generally being out of his kennel space. He has lived his entire life thus far in an indoor kennel with a concrete floor. He is nervous to go outside and it appears that he was not exposed to the outdoors much. He had to live, eat, sleep and mess in his kennel as his elderly owner could no longer care for him. He had dogs in kennels next to him but was not socialized or ever given the opportunity to be around other dogs. A
proper dog introduction was performed in a safe environment for Blue to succeed and he did very well. He seemed to enjoy meeting a new dog, was immediately submissive to the other dog but showed no
signs of his typical crouch walk or urinating on himself. Blue is not potty trained to go outside, he messes wherever he is as he was never taught any different. Blue is currently fighting an ear infection and is
in need of a bath and just basic canine care. It appears that no one has ever cared for him, kept him clean, safe and offered him the opportunity to enjoy life out of his kennel. His teeth are very covered in plaque and his wrists and elbows have calloused from long hours laying on concrete. Blue is not food motivated and showed little interest in toys as he had never experienced them before, when he did play it was only with himself, he showed no knowledge of playing with a human. He responded only to happy upbeat tones of a voice rather than any actual commands such as come here, sit, stay. He has had no training, showed no signs of knowing basic commands and almost everything is still new to him.
Blue portrays a very fearful and timid personality and lacks confidence. He hides behind things and
crouches down when he walks as pretty much everything is new and scary to him. He absolutely warmed up after a short period of time and has learned that the ladies at the shelter are fun, give him pets and aren't scary at all. He was very affectionate once he was able to get over his concerns.
Blue would benefit from basic canine care such as a clean place to sleep, clean food and water bowls, baths and a gentle patient path to basic commands and basic training. He would do best with a human that follows a consistent, praise based, patient training protocol and he be given time to be introduced to normal dog life at a slow steady pace allowing for setbacks when things get a little scary or overwhelming such as walking on carpet or grass for the first time, or hearing tv, music or the washing machine spinning out a load. Too much stimulation will have Blue running for cover, he would like to be introduced to the world slowly and on terms he can handle for now. With some work, Blue could develop into a fine dog and amazing companion, he just has never been given any type of opportunity to excel or succeed.
Blue is a lovey, affectionate fella who deserves to be loved back and shown that the world has fun wonderful things in it he could enjoy. With time, I am confident that Blue would really come out of his shell and be an
absolutely wonderful companion, he just needs a bit of extra help, basic dog care and reassurance along his path there.
