Gunner- Adopted

5yr old neutered male Coonhound

Meet Gunner!

He is a 5yr old neutered male who is a true sweetheart, loves a good adventure and is excellent with kids. No history of aggression or biting, so he would make a perfect dog for a family! Sometimes can be a little jumpy from excitement with people but as he’s aged he’s mellowed out a ton. He will guard his home, howling at the Amazon driver and unfamiliar faces, but the moment you say his name he becomes his friendly self.

Our reasoning for rehoming is that we found out our oldest is very allergic about two years ago and we have to keep them separated to prevent our child from having a severe reaction. We’ve done ok with him being outside the last two years, but before that he was inside/outside. We’ve been wrestling with rehoming because we cannot give him the love he deserves. Especially with having to keep him separated from our son and us being super careful with handwashing/no dander on our clothes. We never thought we’d have to make this choice, he really is a great dog. This decision we have not made lightly.

He has some hunting experience, mainly raccoons and then a handful of times duck and goose hunting, he listened and retrieved really well. When he had treed a coon his recall was excellent and able to calm down right afterwards. He definitely is not gun shy. He’s also very good with other dogs. We have an outdoor cat that he is good with (sometimes too playful but she sets him straight haha). He hasn’t done much on a leash we’ve mostly collar trained, but he’s not horrible with it.

We’ve done a bit of hiking with him on the e collar. I’d say once he builds trust with you, he would probably do good. We have also taken him on walking/hiking trails on a retractable leash + loose on e collar and he does so good! If he gets a sniff of something he sometimes gets a little excited.

Gunner enjoys a good adventure, but he also appreciates his love for sleeping and relaxing. It’s either high energy, ready for exercise or he’s sun bathing and taking a nap. Sometimes he wakes up for the day around 10am for breakfast. It’s quite comical! But he will keep up with you! He could go all day!

Gunner loves having a friend around. He used to have a companion before we had to rehome him and move Gunner outside (it was a smaller dog/short haired, not suitable to move outdoors at all). He has had many play dates with other family member’s dogs (big and small). Also, he loves a good chunk it ball!

He was adopted by a family that loves their hounds in SLC, UT!
